The adventure race on Aug. 24, 2013, is the first of its kind in Costa Rica and Latin America, and the only race in the world to circumnavigate an active volcano, according to race promotional material.
Riders from all over the world will test their stamina and skill riding 100 miles (160 km) through five microclimates – from the Northern Pacific dry plains of Guanacaste up over Costa Rica’s Continental Divide to lush cloud forests, across rivers, around smoldering cinder ash of the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano to where it meets with the Miravalles Volcano.
Located in Costa Rica’s northern Guanacaste plains, Rincón de la Vieja is the largest volcano in the country’s northwest region. Standing 6,286 feet tall, its caldera is 9 miles (15 km) wide. The Rincón de la Vieja Volcano and National Park were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999; the active volcano is considered a mystical and sacred place by the ancient Curubandé tribe.
The incomparable mountain bike race will travel varied terrain – gravel roads, red clay roads, river and volcanic rock trails, single track, and smooth white calcium rock road – with a total elevation gain of 10,862 feet (3,311 meters).
Costa Rica and the Rincón de la Vieja area are fast gaining popularity for endurance sports. Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin recently hosted the international North Face Endurance Challenge on June 22, involving 80k, 50k, 21k and 10k rugged adventure runs at Rincón de la Vieja.
Costa Rica also has been chosen to host this year’s Adventure Racing World Championships 2013, which will see 80 teams from around the world competing non-stop for 140 hours on adventure challenges from Nov. 29 to Dec. 12.
The race course will run coast-to-coast from the Pacific to the Caribbean and border-to-border across Costa Rica from Nicaragua to Panama. Disciplines include: trekking/running, mountain biking, ocean and river kayaking, rafting, abseiling, coasteering, and canyoning.
And of course, there is the “La Ruta de los Conquistadores“ (The Route of the Conquistadors), Costa Rica’s premier mountain bike race and one of the most challenging adventure races in the world. Hundreds of the best mountain bikers and endurance racers from around the planet come every year to Costa Rica to cross the country’s most tempestuous terrain from the Pacific to the Caribbean in only three days. This year’s event from Oct. 24 to 26 celebrates the race’s 20-year anniversary.
The diverse terrain and varied climate of Rincón de la Vieja Volcano were the reasons organizers chose the location for the Rincón de la Vieja Challenge mountain biking race. Event headquarters will be at adventure eco-lodge Hacienda Guachipelin. Reservations and booking for the event can be arranged by contacting the hotel at 506-2666-8075 or emailing email@example.com.
Located 15.5 miles (25 km) northeast of Guanacaste’s principal city of Liberia, Hacienda Guachipelín Hotel is the place to stay at Rincón de la Vieja Volcano for an active vacation.
The first-class ecotourism lodge is a center for adventure and nature lovers, offering canopy zip lines, canyoning, waterfall rappelling, river tubing, horseback riding, mountain biking, nature trails, and thermal springs – all on a working horse and cattle ranch.

Our adventures are popular in the Guanacaste area. The closeness to the beach and the fact that the volcano is active makes the area a popular destination. Adventures for all ages , plus nature and lots of volcanic activity makes the area the place to change the pace.
Here is a nice comment from a recent visit posted on the Costa Rica forum .
Yes, we called Guachipelin in the morning right after they opened and got there soon after.
We have amazing pictures and videos of my daughter’s adventures! I’ll make sure and show them to her when she’ll become a mother and worry about her kids! All those “Tarzan swings” and upside-down ziplining….good thing I didn’t know anything about them at the time they were happening!:-)))
Despite all challenges, Jessica Gallant was able to hike Rincon de la Vieja. Not to the top, since there has been serious activity on the top, but to pristine waterfalls and through trails.
According to The Edmonton Journal 29 Team Diabetes members had raised more than $228,000. That is a lot of money. We are really happy for the Canadian Diabetes Association.
According to the article, Jessica mentioned “It didn’t matter. I had no idea I could hike six hours on rugged trails with two new hips and a wonky knee.”
Rincon de la Vieja Volcano is a magic place. We are proud that Jessica chose this destination for her challenge.
Hacienda Guachipelin has been expanding the range of activities for years. Our idea is to have have activities available for everyone, no matter age or physical condition. One of the activities that can be practiced is mountain bike. The are many trails with different levels of difficulty within the property. So if mountain bike is on your to do list for your next vacation in Costa Rica, get in touch with us.
This coming june, on the 16th, Hacienda Guachipelin will the home for The North Face Costa Rica Ecogreen Rincon de la Vieja. The categories are 10K, 21K, 42K and 60K.
The route is posted on Facebook . The route is flat and is on trails next to two rivers, which gives it the shade and coolness of the river. The runners will monkeys and all kinds of birds, it is simply spectacular.
Don’t miss out on this race.
If you like horses I strongly recommend the whole day horseback riding you can do here at Hacienda Guachipelin. You don’t have to be good on horseback riding to do this tour!
I do my internship here at Hacienda Guachipelin and works with the horses every day, and this tour is my favorite because you get to see the best sides of Guanacaste Costa Rica. You get to see everything from dry jungle to rain forest. You get the chance to ride in rivers, up on hills and around the area of other farms. Maybe the monkeys jump over your head as you ride in the forest. You will probably see a lot of beautiful birds and other animals.
The adventure tour starts at 8 am and the ride goes to Oropéndola witch is a big and beautiful waterfall where you got the opportunity to jump from the cliffs and swim in the clear water.
After the visit to Oropéndola you get up on the horses again and start the ride to Rio Negro hot springs, when we are arriving at Rio Negro you get to see the beautiful hot springs where you get painted in mud from the volcano. You can sit and relax in the hot springs where the water comes directly from the volcano. There are different pools with different degrees in it, so you can chose the one that fits you best. After the relax at the hot springs you start to ride again.
More bathing and refreshing surprises will be discovered under the day.
The Guides at the Adventure Tours of Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin recently took their annual refreshment training course to polish their skills in Safety and Rescue.
In a way to ensure the best quality operation and applying the best security practices, the canopy tour guides as well as the tubing adventure guides overcome a 24 hour hands-on training during 3 days.
Part of the themes that they need to see is Safety, knots, anchors and rigging, basic pulley systems, vectors and angles, how to rig a stretcher, rescue procedures, swift water safety & rescue; to mention just a few…
As one of the guides said: “This is really good training because the only way to be fluent in this type of procedures is with plenty practice. Hopefully we don’t need to use it, but in the case, we are prepared and we know what to do”
Not many companies do this type of training and most just think that the personnel knowledge is just fine. Doing this type of training is what sets Hacienda Guachipelin bar to none with other adventure companies.
This training was given by Outdoor Adventures. For more information about this and other adventure training courses please check www.outdooradventures.cr
