In Guanacaste, Costa Rica, the Long-Tailed Manakin, or Chiroxiphia linearis, by its scientific name, can be found at the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano National Park , where observers can enjoy the species wide variety of songs and duets.  These birds have quite an astonishing vocal repertoire that accompanies its fascinating mating ritual.

During mating season, competing male birds sing Toledo duets from high above in the forest’s canopy in order to attract the female species to the mating spot called “leks”.  When a female Long-Tailed Manakin arrives to the “lek”, both male birds descend to near the forest floor to perform a “dance” for the female.

While singing their “dance song”, both male birds perform cartwheels and all sorts of acrobatics before the female.  Once the female has decided who will be her partner, the dominant male gives the “buzz-kweet” call for the other to leave.  Once alone, the male performs a private dance and song for his lifetime partner.

The Manakins song is quite distinctive and noticeable. This beautiful bird and its song is one of the reasons to visit Rincon de la Vieja National Park. a treat for experts and amateur bird watchers. Tours can be arranged with www.guanacastetours.com .
