History of Hacienda Guachipelín
Originally founded in the 19th century, the Hacienda ranch stretched from the tip of the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano all the way to the Pacific Ocean. In 1975, Tomás Batalla Esquivel, a renowned cattle and purebred Spanish horse breeder, acquired the property. In recent years, Don Tomás' children have joined their father in his efforts to further the family legacy.
For more than a century, we are still a working horse and cattle ranch. Hacienda Guachipelín borders the Las Pailas section of the Rincón de la Vieja National Park. Today, the property comprises nearly 3,400 acres (1,360 hectares) of land, of which 1,730 acres (700 hectares) are set aside for the conservation of tropical dry forest; 1,025 acres (410hectares) are used as pastureland; and 625 acres (250 hectares) are being reforested with tree species in danger of extinction. The property is bathed by three rivers – Rio Blanco, Rio Colorado and Rio Negro. Elevation ranges from 1,312 feet (400 meters) up to 2,625 feet (800 meters).
We are focused on being a self-sufficient community using energy production methods that are ecologically correct. For example, our water heaters use solar energy and electricity is produced by a water wheel.
