Adventure Races at Hacienda Guachipelin
Costa Rica has become a magnet for adventure races and high-endurance extreme sports. Elite international athletes travel to Costa Rica several times a year for competitions.
One of the most popular zones for adventure races is Guanacaste, Costa Rica. And Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin has become the headquarters for several top international adventure races, due to its exceptional location next to the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano and National Park.
“One of the interesting aspects of Rincon de la Vieja for adventure racing is its different terrain and microclimates. There is savannah, tropical forest, desert, and cloud forest, and the weather changes as you go up in elevation.” Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin owner Jose Tomas Batalla.

Since 2013 one of the most popular international ultra-trail running events in Latin America, The North Face Endurance Challenge Costa Rica, is held every year in May at Hacienda Guachipelin and Rincon de la Vieja Volcano.
Organized by The North Face outdoor gear and clothing company in the USA, hundreds of runners from all over the world compete in four endurance trail-running races of 10km, 21km, 50km and 80km. The race courses vary in difficulty and terrain, spanning altitudes between 850 feet and 3,280 feet.
The newest Costa Rica adventure race – 160K Rincon de la Vieja Mountain Bike Race – zooms into action in August 2016 at Hotel Hacienda Guachipelín. This extreme mountain bike race tests elite mountain bikers on a 100-mile (160 km) circumnavigation of the active Rincon de la Vieja Volcano in Guanacaste. Racers will compete in three distances: 160 km (100 miles), 100 km (62 miles), and 50 km (31 miles) by the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano.
Competitors have 12 hours to ride gravel roads, singletrack, and river and volcanic rock trails through five microclimates with close to 11,000 feet of elevation gain.
